In the latest installment of the REEM documentary we follow Alistair Overeem to Seoul, South Korea as he enters the K-1 Heavyweight Tournament. Alistair is a rare breed of martial artist that has proven to be world class at two disciplines – kickboxing and MMA. Making the transition between both is no small feat. Yet Alistair seems to make it look easy. One of his greatest assets has got to be his tremendous strength. Anyone who has witnessed the body transformation of Alistair within the past three years has got to be as astonished as we are. At 6’5″, Alistair weighs in at a rock-solid 265 pounds, the upper limit of the heavyweight class. And after watching his recent performances, the added muscle has not affected his speed in the slightest. He’s looked simply unstoppable.
Which begs the question: How would Alistair do against top-flight UFC competition, the likes of Cain Velasquez or Brock Lesnar? With the recent acquisition of Strikeforce by Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, we may not have to wait much longer. The UFC’s heavyweight division always seems to be on shaky ground with the rash of injuries that have struck some of the top guys. The introduction of Alistair to the UFC lineup makes for some very interesting matchups down the road. It will also decide once and for all whether Alistair is indeed one of the world’s top heavyweights or not. Here at Strong-Athlete, we believe he is. The truth may be discovered sooner than later this year.
