Strong Athlete visited one of Canada’s top martial arts instructors to learn how MMA competitors get into fighting form. Joey has close to three decades of experience training fighters for battle, and knows how important conditioning is, especially at the highest level.
In the feature video below, Joey takes us through three essential exercises he uses to condition his athletes:
1. Ladders are a drill that work on speed, agility and quickness. They help with footwork, a vital skill for fighters to have.
2. Burpees are used for overall body conditioning and fight-specific cardio. In a fight, you will often have to “change levels”, meaning you may have to quickly move from a standing position to a sprawl in order to defend a takedown. The burpee mimics this pattern and trains the athlete to be able to quickly changes levels under fatigue.
3. Explosive Pull Ups & Chin ups are essential for fighters who want to compete at the highest level. Two of the fundamental disciplines of MMA, wrestling and grappling, require tremendous grip, arm and back strength. Pull Ups and Chin Ups performed explosively develop these qualities and can help a fighter dominate his or her opponent in the clinch or on the ground.
