Magnesium – The Super Hero Mineral

Minerals are essential to ensuring that your body can function at superhuman levels. Most people do not get enough minerals in their diets, so in many cases it is necessary to add mineral supplements into your daily protocols if you want to be incredible.

I want to let you in on a little performance secret and share with you the most important mineral we have found that is commonly lacking in most peoples lives and how supplementing with it could help change your life forever!

In my opinion, the Super Hero of all minerals is Magnesium!

Of course, let me start by saying there are other super important minerals that I am also a huge fan of, so let’s not dismiss them in any way. But for today, Magnesium is going to wear the crown!

Magnesium plays so many important roles in the body and without it there’s virtual no way that you can operate at superhuman levels. Sadly, Magnesium deficiency is one of the leading deficiencies in adults, with an estimated 80% being deficient.

The research behind the benefits of Magnesium supplementation is staggering. I’m a big fan of GOOD research but sometimes even more important to me are the real results I have experienced personally  with the athletes I coach and with myself.

The proof is in the pudding so to speak. (No I don’t support eating crappy pudding and I’m not sorry to say that kids). Wait I lied, I do support this amazing chocolate avocado pudding recipe that my girlfriend tricked me into eating one day. Funny thing is, I never let her leave after that day! If you want the most amazing superfood pudding recipe that’s rich in minerals check it out HERE.

Ok that was a bit of tangent but definitely a golden recipe for you to check out.

Back to Magnesium the Super Hero!

Magnesium deficiency is even more common among those who workout making it an even more important mineral for hard-training athletes! Let’s not forget our high-stressed business men and women, high-pressure lifestyles definitely cause Magnesium depletion too!

Among many other benefits, Magnesium is very important for improving body composition and enhancing recovery from training. What’s more, research has shown that Magnesium can help to keep cortisol levels under control and can play a role in reducing stress levels (see why I mentioned you super-stressed people now). And we all know elevated cortisol levels can cause a whole mess of issues such as unwanted fat gain, and if you didn’t know that you do now!

Alright, so having low Magnesium is a problem, but what are the all benefits of supplementing with Magnesium?

The list is actually very long so I decided to narrow it down to my top 10 benefits of taking the right Magnesium supplement (more on the RIGHT one in a minute).

Top 10 Health Benefits of Magnesium

  1. Helps Increase Energy
  2. Improves Sleep Quality
  3. Helps Calms Nerves & Reduce Stress and Anxiety
  4. Helps Improve Digestion
  5. Increases Muscle Performance
  6. Relieves Muscle Aches and Spasms (including restless leg syndrome)
  7. Regulates Vital Levels of Calcium, Potassium and Sodium
  8. Helps Improve Body Composition
  9. Prevents Migraine Headaches
  10. Helps Prevent Osteoporosis (WAY better than calcium)

But why might you be deficient in Magnesium? Good question. There are a number of theories on this but the top ones I have come across and witnessed are:

  1. Low quality, non-sustainable farming practices have caused excessive soil depletion, which lowers the amount of Magnesium present in crops (another reason to choose sustainably and/or organic farmed foods).
  2. Digestive disorders caused by a whole mess of low-quality processed foods in most people’s diets create malabsorption issues of Magnesium and other key minerals in the gut
  3. Use of prescription drugs such as antibiotics, damages your digestive tract to the point where Magnesium cannot be absorbed and properly utilized from foods.
  4. Diets high in anti-nutrients such as refined sugar cause the body to excrete Magnesium through the kidney’s depleting the body’s levels. The more sweet foods and processed baked goods you have in your diet, the more likely you are going to be deficient in Magnesium and other vital nutrients.

The bottom line is that Magnesium is friggin’ awesome! It activates over 300 enzyme reactions in the body, supporting thousands of biochemical reactions happening on a constant basis daily. It’s so powerful that I bet Superman could use it to combat Kryptonite!

It’s crucial to nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, energy production, nutrient metabolism and bone and cell formation. Basically everything necessary to walk the earth as a superhuman!

Need we say more?

Here’s the most important part! DO NOT go out and buy just any Magnesium supplement! The majority of the Magnesium supplements on store shelves are — USELESS because they primarily contain the extremely low quality source Magnesium Oxide.

Magnesium in general is very hard for the body to absorb, hence why it can be used as a laxative in high dosages. And low quality sources such as Magnesium Oxide have roughly an absorbability of just 3% – which sucks!

To reap all the incredible benefits of Magnesium you need to first get it into your system! We have experiment with countless different forms and brands over the years and after we’ve tried and tested so many we’ve found a favorite.

We recommend using the form Magnesium Bisglycinate for maximum results. Research shows that it has the best absorption out of all the forms for most people.

There’s a number of good brands out there that produce a Magnesium Bisglycinate supplement but we commonly use CanPrev. So far it’s been hands down the best oral Magnesium product we have used to date for our athletes and ourselves!

As for suggested dosage, that always depends on what the specific needs are of the individual we are coaching. Everyone is different, so it’s important to get the right recommended dosage depending on your needs after doing a thorough assessment.

So there you have it. Magnesium is the Super Hero mineral and if you’re not taking it, chances are you’re not living up to your full potential!
